One of my favourite US cities is its capital, Washington D.C. It is so unlike a lot of other American cities; it's spacious, open, green, low-rise, calm, and absolutely full to the brim of incredible sights in a relatively small area. We learnt so much about the US in the numerous (and beautiful) museums and monuments dedicated to the relatively short history of the country. The National Museum of the American Indian was my absolute favourite, and taught us so much about the history, culture, faith and art of the indigenous people in a building that really stood out from the others that neighbour it. Similarly, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument was an imposing and poignant reminder of unimaginable struggles that continue to this day. Unfortunately, the US Capitol was under restoration when we visited, and looked rather like an enormous game of Kerplunk. We went to Washington in October 2015 for five days, and stayed in the most gorgeous family-run guesthouse near Woodley Park and the National Cathedral. The weather was bright, crisp and dry, making for a stunning first impression.
